MNEMORING

Mnemoring is a conceptual memory trainer that helps you to better retain information you have heard and recall it later.

The name Mnemoring is derived from mnemonics. For a short while, ‘Memoring’ was also under consideration – it’s much easier to remember. But for a memory project, that would probably have been too simple.


The starting point for the project was the question of how auditory content can be more firmly anchored in the memory through visual, spatial and haptic stimuli.

Much of the information we receive is only fleeting: in lessons, in conversations or during lectures. It is particularly difficult to process such content meaningfully straight away. This is where Mnemoring comes in. The ring links spoken information to a real object in the surroundings. This creates an additional mental connection: the information is not merely heard, but is linked to a shape, a place and an action.

Concept

The project is based on the principles of mnemonics and dual coding. Information is easier to remember when it is processed not only linguistically, but also visually or spatially. It is particularly important to devise a logical order in which to memorise the information, for example from left to right or from top to bottom. Mnemoring applies this approach to an interactive product.

Users trace an object with the ring and speak the information they wish to remember. It can be helpful to link not just the information itself, but an event or a personal experience associated with the object, and to record this as well. The ring captures the object’s structure and links it to the spoken content. If the object is scanned again later, Mnemoring can play back the stored information. In this way, an everyday object becomes a personal memory anchor.

Implementation

The system consists of a ring and an accompanying case. The ring features a microphone, a loudspeaker, a button, a display and a LiDAR sensor for detecting object structures.

The case is used for charging and storing the ring and also features a display and is easy to operate via a rotary push-button. As part of the project, we devised the process, assessed the technical feasibility and designed the product form. To develop the visual concept, we created an initial 3D-printed prototype that brings the idea to life as a portable, interactive object.
